Message from YAMADA Keiji, Governor, Kyoto Prefecture

On the opening of “Bochi-Bochi to Kyoto"-- a site that supports living according to the traditional knowledge and culture of Kyoto

Today, urgent responses are required to the world-wide environmental problem of global warming that seriously affects the future of the human race. An accumulation of our own activities based on our care and ingenuity may be the first step in solving the big issues of passing on this irreplaceable, beautiful Earth to our children and building a spiritually rich society.

Kyoto is the birth place of the "Kyoto Protocol" in which the countries of the world promised to act to reduce greenhouse gases. Therefore, Kyoto Prefecture has pioneered a variety of environmental measures, such as the Kyoto Eco Point Model Program, Solar Town Project, and the EV/PHV Town Plan.

On the other hand, Kyoto has valued the abundance of nature throughout its long history. The concept of an interrelationship between humans and nature expressed as "human beings are a part of nature" and the knowledge and wisdom of lifestyle symbolized by the word “Mottainai (what a waste)" are still alive today.

Today, I think it is important for us to apply the concept of an interrelationship between humans and nature that is a characteristic of Kyoto into our everyday lives and into society and the economy.

This website introduces the stories of people who live with nature in each region of Kyoto Prefecture. I hope it will make us rethink our daily lives and affect how each of us behaves from tomorrow.

Let's live “Bochi-Bochi to (slowly)" to the rhythm of nature, in a Kyoto environment of lifestyles in which people support each other.

November 2009
Governor of Kyoto Prefecture, YAMADA Keiji
