Food Specialist SUGIMOTO Setsuko

Some lifestyle knowledge from Japanese merchant family life of days gone by still remains with us today. Especially, in food.

My family were kimono dealers since the Edo period. They kept a notebook of their everyday life in detail. The first page of this notebook describes the customs throughout the year. Every meal was regulated, such as ‘Morning and evening is Ochazuke and pickles. Lunch is soup and vegetables. However, from 10th September to 2nd March we will have Chagayu in the morning'. The ideal way of eating for a kimono dealer in the Muromachi neighborhood was frugal, as in the song "Kyoto Sanjyo Muromahi/I heard it's like heaven/ But if you come here you will see it's hell/ The noren outside shops hide rice porridge".

Even though modern society is very different from the Edo period, perhaps we should rethink the reservation of those days once again. I think it is important to have a sense of gratitude and a due sense of pride as a human being. Maybe such awareness is needed for us live in harmony with the environment.

Ecological achievement is invisible and hard to realize. I hope this site will guide us toward an enjoyable and clever ecological lifestyle. With this site we can do it slowly -- Bochi Bochi to!
